‘Kennaquhair’ was the winner of £17,126 and a very fine individual and stayer. He was retired to stud in 1921 to ‘Mungie Bundie Stud’ in 1922.

‘Cetigne’ was the winner of £27,216 and at the time second on the list of winning Australian racehorses. He was retired to stud in 1921 to Mr T A Stirton’s ‘Dunlop Stud’ at Merriwa. This is a scenario which has almost completely evaporated one hundred years later. Merriwa used to be a very fertile and productive area for thoroughbred production with several wealthy graziers and pastoralists strongly supporting the industry. Arthur Wright is the only relict of this once vibrant locale. Members of the Stirton family are still around the area but no longer involved in raising horse.

‘Artilleryman’ won the VRC Melbourne Cup; dead-hated in the AJC Derby etc. He died in 1920.

In the early 1900s Sir Samuel Hordern owned a thoroughbred stud ‘Petwyn Vale’ at Wingen just north of Scone. This property still exists although no longer in the ownership of the Hordern Family.

Sir Samuel Hordern also commissioned a Triptych portrait (Plate 17) by Martin Stainforth showing Cross Battery with ‘Artilleryman’ as a foal at foot in 1916; Comedy King (imp) the sire of Artilleryman; Artilleryman winner of the VRC Melbourne Cup in 1919. He also presented this painting to the AJC.

Gloaming (26). Bay Gelding, 1915, by The Welkin (imp.) – Light (imp.). Winner of 43 races out of 46 starts to date of publication (1922), and £28,443. Owned by Mr G D Greenwood, NZ. One of the most brilliant horses bred in Australia. His battles with Beauford raced by Mr W H Mackay were epic.

The painting would also have been ‘constructed’ at Widden Stud. There is a headstone marking the final resting place of Linacre together with Maltster and many other champion stallions to stand at Widden.
