Mr John Brown was one of the so-called early ‘Coal Barons’ to invest in Thoroughbred Racing and Breeding. This cadre were from the Lower Hunter Valley and had established their fortunes in the Coal Mining and Exporting Industry. They were ‘Industrial Leviathans’ as opposed to the land-holding squatters and pastoralists.
