Capitalist won the Breeders Plate, Magic Millions 2YO Classic and Golden Slipper – great example of a natural 2YO talent and now a leading sire.

Just when I thought I knew a bit I’m dragged right back to the very beginning! Since the introduction of the Golden Slipper Stakes for 2yos by George Ryder and the STC in 1957 most of us thought this heralded the rush to the yearling sales and the early dollar return for investors by the purchase of ostensibly precocious youngsters. It appeared so on the surface. However cogent statistical analysis of the early racetrack performance of presumed ‘commercial’ yearlings by Tara Madgwick suggests otherwise? Very few of these elite selected youngsters make it to the races in the first half of the racing season each year (10%). It’s not really a very good bet when you think about it; or is it? It was the late Dick Francis who stated: “Breeders are dreamers of dreams”! Does the same wise aphorism also apply to the racing cartels? It’s almost as if the former (breeder cartel ) subscribes en masse to the Wildean maxim that: “Nothing succeeds like excess”?

First Season Sire Statistics as at 31/12/2021

Sire Position Yearlings Sold 2021 Starters Winners
The Mission 1st 17 10 3
Heroic Valour 2nd 40 8 3
Russian Revolution 3rd 98 9 3
Hellbent 7th 86 10 0
Impending 9th 66 11 0
Totals   307 48 9

Without calculating bald statistics, the ‘broad expectation’ of a runner by a first season sire in the early part of the racing season is about one 6th while selecting a winner is about 3%?

Sire Position Yearlings Sold 2021 Starters Winners
Written Tycoon 9th 78 5 1
Snitzel 12th 90 2 2
I Am Invincible 13th 102 1 1
Capitalist 16th 116 1 2
Totals   386 9 6

These are some of the best performing sires in recent times and generally command the highest prices at the yearling sales. Of course, this situation could/will change dramatically by the end of the current season at the end of July 2022. However, it highlights the poor expectations in the short term for quick returns on initial investment. I’m not sure if conventional wisdom supports this premise; or not?

Dr Peter Rossdale has passed away

Dr Peter Rossdale OBE, MA, PhD, Drmedvet(hcBerne), DVMS(hc Edinburgh), DVSc(hc Sydney), FACVSc, DESM, FRCVS

Dr Peter Rossdale visited Scone with spouse Jill when on one of his man Australian visits at the behest of the University of Sydney Post Graduate Foundation in Veterinary Science and the Australian Equine Veterinary Association. He very kindly told me Scone was the only place on the globe other than Newmarket UK that he would like to have been in Equine Veterinary Practice? Maybe he was being polite?  Jill Rossdale bred an outstanding international racehorse by the winner of the 1977 Blue Diamond Stakes  ‘Blazing Saddles’ (Todman/Lady Simone by Wilkes; bred by Jim Fleming @ Stone Lodge, Segenhoe). I think ‘Blazing Saddles was one of the first Australian-bred stallions to ‘shuttle’ to the UK? Jill’s horse might have been ‘Mr Brooks (GB)’ [Blazing Saddles ex Double Finesse GB by Double Jump GB] who raced in both Europe and the USA where he met his fate on the racetrack; possibly in Florida? Peter and Jill also had a son who spent time @ Bob Watson’s ‘Roseneath Stud’, Cobbitty on a ‘gap year’ at the behest of ex-AEVA Treasurer and Keeneland USA representative Professor Rex Butterfield.
