There is no doubt early race meetings were ‘primitive’ by today’s standards. Many were ‘bush tracks’ cleared for the purpose. Obstacles were many and varied. It was a ‘game of chance’ as much as horsemanship and riding skills.

In 1844 Five Dock was almost virgin bush land. It’s a very crowded inner west Sydney suburb today!
